Just bought a new bike (Claude Butler pagon) and ive done about 5 miles, already there is slight side to side movement of the crank / bottom bracket area. (if you hold the crank arm and move it side to side towards the frame you can feel movement...) also noticeable when in high gears and peddle hard.

The bike was bought for a shop on a day out, so it probably wont be cost effective to take it back due to having to travel. Is this something that can be tightened up by a local bike shop or a new part needed?

I have looked at other posts but they all seem to refer to older used bikes.

Cheers

looking at the bottom bracket area when you move the crank arms and the whole thing that goes through the frame moves.

Is it the red mountain bike on the links I've looked at, as the description says cartridge BB. If so there is a chance that the BB hasn't been fitted tight, or a crank or pedal is loose.

You will need a crank extractor and a BB socket to get it off to check. You may be better popping into a local bike shop if you can't check.

If it's tight, and toy can feel movement, the BB is faulty. They do go like this with use, but not new.

Turns out it was some 'threaded collar' that goes on after the sealed unit is fitted, wasnt tightened up properly and causes things to move. Note to self, check the bike over before you leave the shop!
