I've definitely got the right allen key, but once it loosens it just retighten on the captive boltto the point where it won't go further. Should I just push on through? Cheers.
Yes (within reason - if things start making bad noise, best to stop). The bolt will tighten as it unwinds, but once the crank arm loosens it will get freer again.

It sometimes needs a bit of force if it has been on a length of time and no or not much grease.
