quick stab would be

170 = arm length
9/16x20 = pedal thread size

not sure re other markings and no doubt some one will advise otherwise

The 170 is crank length.

The number in the box is the date stamp - sometime in the 1980's I presume.

The F stands for something like Finesse - not important.

What you need to do is identify the cranks - have you a picture of the outside drive side?

something like this

If it's a square taper, then you'll want a campag one or another ISO standard BB. If your use a JIS standard one like a Shimano you will find the chainline will be incorrect.

Unless the cranks are clearly marked with a European manufacturer's name like Campagnolo, Stronglight, TA, then my first guess would be that the square taper is more likely to be a JIS - so you would be better with a Shimano BB.

However with a 70mm BB shell you clearly have a bicycle with an Italian pedigree so if the cranks are original they might be ISO..... in which case a Campag BB will be a good choice, but you still need to get the spindle length right.

Do you have the old BB to check the spindle length?

From the back marks they are Campagnolo - I would hazard a guess at Athena from the 80's early 90's.

Ignore the makings on the crank arms please but these should be your cranks (click on the far right photo).

If so from a quick Google I believe they took a 111mm Iso BB spindle - can you try one out at a local bike shop?
