Strangely we were doing the same thing in the early 70's here in Blighty, didn't really have any mountains but plenty of waste ground and a couple of quarries to play in. Cowhorn bars and probably a back brake on an old Raleigh 3 speed with the cable tied to the bottom bracket to keep it in first gear for going flat and up then loosening it to get top for downhill, the old railway embakments of the defunct 'Great Central' was popular too.

The 'Flouncing Nobber' although a few years younger than me used to witter on about it but my Cousin who is 7yrs older than me had a 'Tracker'too so it had been going on since the mid 60's.
