We are thinking of going to Croatia.
The brochures we have been able to get seem to be (mainly) good quality hotels on half board or all inclusive basis'. Our thinking (at this moment) is to go self contained or b&b.
The self contained (villas etc) are mainly geared to families or larger groups whereas it will likely be just the 2 of us.
so.............as we all know.......CCrs are a font of experience.........
Any thoughts welcome.
BTW.........we haven't decided on any particular region. We like the coast and want to be in an area that gives the possibility of visiting places of interest by bus or car hire.

Do they have tourist farms like Slovenia?

I went to Istria last September with Thomson, self catering, very good and inexpensive. We hired a car for the day, lots of things to explore/visit and also took an organised Thomson trip to Lake Bled which was fantastic

Accommodation had a tourist train and boat close by into Porec town, a lovely place

The place we stayed was quite hilly so bear that in mind if you or your wife have any mobility issues

We stayed here http://www.thomson.co.uk/destinatio...ec/apartments/laguna-bellevue-apartments.html

We had a two bed apartment but they also have one beds. There's a good pool, a good restaurant and a little shop on site

Highly recommended (weather was a little cool for sunbathing etc in mid Sept, end of season, you'd want a (beer) jacket in the evening. The coast is very rocky, if you plan to go in the sea, get those rubber shoes!

Many thanks............that is the sort of thing/place we are looking for.
My original thinking was to find somewhere between Dubrovnic and Istria but on reflection it may be better to have one or the other. Someone I met 'raved' about the Porec area (not seen him since so don't know where he stayed.

It's a really lovely area, loads to see, a few good towns like Pula as well as Porec, lots of history. The accommodation was more than adequate for under £500 pp for the week

Dubrovnik is great for a 3 or 4 day city break

If a 2 week holiday, maybe Thomson offer a 2 centre option? They are certainly my tour operator of choice for a package, the rep was excellent (my friend managed to drop her purse on the transfer after a boat trip - and the rep managed to find it and get it back to us). Just remembered that was another excursion we did, BBQ boat trip for about £25, Bled was about £60, well worth it, stunning. Car hire was simple too, organised through rep, dropped off and picked up at the apartments, around £60 for the day maybe

We're off to Croatia this summer and doing our own thing. Booked apartments in several locations (Hvar, Cavtat - outside Dubrovnik, and Split). Travelling will be part hire car, part public transport

Tho id would love to vist Dubrovnik..my admin lady at work goes in a week or 2..im looking forward to the low down

 I just had a mental image of Slovenians capturing and corralling tourists.
Really quite comfortable, clean, great locations, big portions of local home-cooked food. Some are local eateries, some are local homes in villages, most are working farms. Croatia has similar, you can pick up a guide and map at tourist info.
