Why not? Although I don't think Northants is the hilliest county

Three reasons for triple
1. Northants may not be that hilly but I am getting older
2. I intend to ride in other places and not just Northants
3. I have noticed that I use the lower ring (30T) quite a lot in present rides with Triban 3

If you use a 30t on a triple, then i very much doubt a compact setup will suit you.
