As some of you know, I'm about to buy my first road bike in 20 years. Keeping my trusty MTB with slicks for popping to the shops, going off road etc
Went to my lbs today and tried several bikes

Specialized sirrus comp hybrid
Specialized tricross 2012
Specialized secteur
Cube peleton race and pro
They didn't have the Defy 1 or 2 unfortunately

I'm going back tomorrow to see the cube in a 58 frame as the 56 was slightly too small and I felt cramped in the cockpit. Great bike and spec, but the bike radar review of the peleton race is making me think twice. It said it didn't cope well with bad roads through the rear wheel and seat stays, but the front did.

The defy 2 reviews are just fantastic!!!! Great frame smooth etc etc

Do I go for the cube or wait and try the defy? The cube being in stock and ready to go????

Anybody have either bike and give me some opinions please

Never realised buying my roadie would be so complex :-)

Wait and try the defy.

I tried both the m/l defy 2 and the 58cm cube peleton pro last week. Firstly a 58cm cube is like a 56cm in other sizes and if you look on cubes website the geometry shows the effective horizontal top tube length is 56 even though they call the frame 58. Comparing the fit the giant M/L actually feels just slightly bigger than the 58 cube.

What the reviews say about the ride quality of the two bikes is true; the giant is very smooth and doesn't transmit as many vibrations compared to the cube whose rear end really does shake going over a slightly rough road.

Having said that you would think getting the defy is perfect but there is a slight downside. The stiffness of the cube feels much better when you want to go fast and feels as though it accelerates better, you can really feel you pedal power pushing you forward and this could be why it has a rough ride. If you are coming from a MTB background the stiffness is less of a problem and I would get the defy. For me it was just my super heavy old road bike that got me used to a stiff ride so now I don't want to pay more for anything less stiff than I already have.

Having tried both, like you buying a roadie became even more complex for me as I now have to consider if its worth paying more for stiffness and comfort with a possible carbon frame.

First post, but I joined because I had a very similar situation.

Cube. I've got the Peloton Race (in SL colours:wub:)
Yes it's stiff, but you actually feel it surge forwards as you pedal. After a week or two almost solid MTB riding I got back on the Cube this week and that power surge made it feel like the wheel was eliptical over the first few hundred yards, weird feeling. There is a bit of road buzz, but I can live with that 'cos the bike fits me nicely, looks awesome, and goes like a good 'un.

Thanks guys - as ever you have come through!

I'll try the Defy 2 and then make the decision - either way i'm going to have a great bike :-)

Got to admit I love the looks of the Cube and really wanted to get one but was warned off it from my LBS as it is too agressive a frame for my size as a first time roadie.

I went for the Defy 2 and absolutely love it, feels responsive and get good power through it even if looks wise it is a little plain jane. Certainly prefer the looks over all the specialized bikes I see on the road.

I liked the specialised range, but wasn't so keen on the red or white liveries. I think i'm attracted more to black-ish road bikes.
Thanks for that info - i will go ride the cube later today, but won't be leaving a deposit until i've tried a Defy 2

I got the Cube Peloton Pro in March.

The ride can be harsh at times but like Cubist, I can live with it. The colour scheme looks good and the handling is spot on. For the money, it's a fantastic bike and a good frame should you want to upgrade parts in the future.

i have never ridden a cube but 6 months ago bought a defy 2, does exactly what it says on the tin ...dont think you will be dissapointed when you try one^_^

Went back this morning to try the cube in my size in the car park. Also tried a Defy 3 which has Sora gears. The Giant felt a little softer and right for me anyway. If they had a Defy 2 i would have put a deposit down immediately.
The cube has the better crank & brakes being Tiagra and the Easton wheels are great, but imo the Defy frame is more for me.
At £800 i have £200 to buy accessiries.

Next mission is to find a Giant stockists that has one in my size (M/L)

I'm getting closer ...... :-)
