Cube vs Boardman

I have been to couple of shops today to have a look at some bikes etc and while I was there asked some advice.

My requirements are prefer a triple to a compact, relaxed seating position and disc brakes, able to do all types of cycle path and bridleway (from tarmac to mud).

they basically said I shouldn't get a cross bike due to me wanting a more relaxed seating position and suggested and hybrid or 29er.

so looking at the range I have picked out some bikes that I like the look of.

from Halfords the boardmans.

does anyone know what these bikes are like?

ps when I was in Halfords I over heard the sales person tell someone that wd40 is a light oil and to use it regularly during winter (I thought wd40 is a water dispenser and shouldn't be used as it can wash away the grease from bearings) he also advised the customer to replace the chain every 6 months as if you don't the gearset gets worn out at the rate as the chain. don't know if this is true but doesn't sound like it to me.

With regard to chain wear.... Its not the time, its the mileage... I'd suggest 1000 miles per chain (and not wear the rear sprockets) or 3000 miles (or when it starts to slip) and fit both chain and rear sprockets
