I don't know if y'all have gutter pans over on that side of the pond.

Sadly over on this side of the pond a lot of motorists think/feel that we cyclists must ride in them if there is no bike lane. Even though it is more dangerous to do so. If for no other reason than there is usually all sorts of debris that can cause flats, in some case as in the above photo there is a tire/tyre catching storm drain also in the gutter pan. And in some cases there is both debris that is covering/hiding/camouflaging a tire/tyre catching storm drain.

The other irony (at least on this side of the pond) is that a lot of motorists expect us cyclist to ride under dangerous circumstances that they themselves would not drive their car under.

What I also have to laugh at is that some cyclists seem to think that it is safer to "hug the curb" or ride in the gutter pan. They don't realize that that by doing so that they're encouraging motorists to pass us dangerously close as well as reinforcing the notion/myth that cyclists do not belong on the road.

One such cyclist uses the logic that by hugging the curb that if someone passes too closely that they can "just step off" of their bike and get out of their way and/or hopefully pull their bike along with them to keep it from getting crushed.

We have plenty of them too, its not ideal but most of them have been replaced to have slots perpendicular to the kerb. Some drivers here can be similar in expecting you to be in them  Like wise some cyclists wrongly believe they are safer out of the way in them

If I remember my Cycling proficiency (Yes, I realise it's outdated, but it still sticks) it's taught here that 3ft out is about right for a cyclist (or 2ft at the very least) yet the amount of people that still cycle in the gutter or the door zone is unbelievable.

or that think the double yellow painted lines are a good guide to where to be on the road. Everytime I drive past someone riding like this I feel like 'educating' them, somehow.

We tend not to have the stone finish to the gutter at the edge of the road but we do have the drains. It is also a design standard that the slots should not be in the dirrection of travel, either set them at 90 deg as in Adasta's photo or commonly at 45 deg so that it is imposible to install them in line with the travel.

if I remember right the last time the highway code was written there was a debate about how close to the kerb you should ride as a minmum.
I think the CTC wanted 750mm, but it was eventually decided to specify 500mm?
Of course this is all off the top of my head and I haven't gone back to verify my facts....
