My favourite bird, I love that bubbling call. This morning I sat with a cup of tea in one hand and binoculars in the other and watched two curlews racing around the field at the back of our house, singing away at the tops of their voices.

This evening contractors have arrived and are mowing the fields for hay or silage. The curlews disappeared last year after the contractors had been. Presumably they wil have nested by now and the young will be fully fledged?

Someone please tell me I don't need to worry!

You can hear them here: http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/c/curlew/index.asp

Quite agree, one of the most atmospheric sounds going. I went out with the kids this afternoon and up on the tops near Cupwith there must have been three pairs of larks, all making quite a racket between them. Beautiful.

Don't worry, Curlews will be all flying and perfectly safe from the mowers.

Where I lived as a child there was a huge rookery in the woods, the sound when they came home to roost was loud and noisey but I'd love to there listening to them now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually love the sound of magpies and jackdaws. They annoy a lot of people but not me.

Had to catch a pigeon with me hands today at work. The little b*gger had flown in to our seating area. My god they're hard to hold. I thought I'd broken its wing at first, but it flew off ok.
