Helen,

when you went up to Vierzehnheiligen, you did go inside, didn't you? It's just not clear from the blog.

The Main river is excellent - I spent 4 days on it (between Aschaffenburg and Bamberg) when I was on my 2-week Germany tour last month. Wertheim was a lovely place to stay and I thought Wurzburg was really interesting too. Bamberg is in another league though (at least the old town area!).

I,m touring in Germany too, well I was cycling up the Rhine until somone suggested I take a trip up the Mosel from Koblenz, and having reached Trier I thought I would carry on to see what Luxembourg looked like. Luxembourg city is very hilly, and the rural scene looks too much like France for me, so I will hop back into Germany tomorrow.

Ahh, the Mosel and Trier. You say you were cycling up the Rhein, how far have you come up? I only ask because for me, Northern Germany isn't as nice as Southern Germany. I'd be interested to know where you are heading.

I'm back now and am working on updating my blog with photos (it's a time-consuming task, I'm halfway there though).

Yet another lovely visit to the Fatherland. I'm off to Berlin in September to cycle around the wall and more.

Round it? There's only a short stretch left IIRC.

I think the Pfalz is under-rated and its reachable from the Mosel, it has the world's largest wine festival in Bad Durkheim each year, worth a detour

Rich, I meant round the former location of the wall. It's a short trip, only 140km or so, but should be interesting. I shall also do other day rides around Berlin which is my favourite city in the whole wide world.

I cycled some of the Maurweg, and it can be a bit rough and ready in places (NeuKoln, esp). Berlin is a great city, though, and well worth hanging out there, though for me the old East is the best, Prenzlaurberg, esp, which has some great cafes and bars. The west tends to be a bit too generic. It could be a lot of cities. How long are you going for?

I'm only going for eight days but I've spent oodles of time in Berlin in the past so am pretty familiar with it and will be able to find loads to do. I expect to also cycle to the Spreewald which is very nice.

I, too, much prefer the east - the Kufürstendamm area is just horrible! Mind you, I did spend five weeks in Falkensee just outside Spandau and that was nice and it was former West Berlin, but the British bit rather than the American sector!

I'd love to cycle the Spreewald. But also, I'd quite fancy going up north, towards the Baltic. I imagine the area in between is a bit of lost world, which kind of appeals to me. My friend and I cycled a few years ago, from Berlin to Dresden via Potsdam, the R1, Lutherstadt and the Elbe, and much of the area between potsdam and the Elbe was a lost world - so much more interesting than the west. I've been to Berlin a fair few times and unfortunately it seems to change too much each time. It's still by far my favourite city, but the edges are getting knocked off and the corners smoothed. It's a shame.
Ig you get chance go the the Metzer Eck just off Prenzlaur Allee (near the big water tower). It's the best bar (used to be a Stassi hang out, apparently). Have a dunkelbier for me.
