Nah. He'd be cheating anyway as he wouldn't have to pedal.

Those masks are pointless you suck up so much pollution in every day life anyway a lot more than you are during the avg commute to work. I think anyone wearing those masks instantly tells you what a weed that guy is, its like "oh my precious lungs im such a pussy".

I had to wear one last winter because my health became so bad and i found the cold air was making me cough constantly while cycling. It was a godsend and helped me through a very difficult cycling winter where I almost had to dump the bike and travel with the plebs. If people think I look stupid and weak then thats fine by me.

From the sound of it, you haven't used one of these. But there is a slight reduction in airflow, so your lungs work harder to get the same amount of air in.
In my case it was a BA set that was being used. That includes the air cylinder carried on the back. If you take the weight into account its not as easy as riding without it.

You could always try cycling without using your lungs I suppose. How you'd do is another matter.
You might even realise your lungs are "precious".

Sorry about the late reply. I basically chose to ignore all the negative advice and get myself one of the ultimate cycle masks. I do get one or two odd looks but I SWEAR it is the best cycle accessory I have now. I have been using it for a couple of weeks now and I can't recommend it enough.

To answer some of the negative questions:

Restrict breathing: yeah maybe but after a couple of days you don't feel any restriction.

Comfort: the mask looks big but weighs next to nothing and fits nicely under my helmet.

Car users getting more pollution: not sure I agree. when I drive a car I hit the internal airflow button and i don't breathe any air from outside until i'm out in the countryside.

Oh also, I don't get a sore throat after cycling on really traffic heavy days!

Thanks for all the positive support from those (few) who gave it. Your lungs ARE precious, and it's worth remembering that...

EDIT: I just read that bbc article, yeah that's why i wasn't sure about going for the ones that they sell in regular cycle shops. figured 3M would make a decent one that actually passes various EU tests etc.
