Shimano XC3's are fairly good - just try them on first as you need to size up. Decathlon is a good source of their own shoes ? Big Shimano shoe fan here.

+1 for Decathlon. Got a pair of their cheapest SPD shoes, after my Sidis started hurting my feet on every single ride. They've been excellent, ridiculously good VFM too (even if you have to buy a craft knife- the cleat mounts are under the sole & you need to cut the sole to get to the fittings).

Just be aware most cycle shoes you need to go +1 size eu as they tend to come up small , even worse if like me you have wide feet .
best shoes true to size i ever found were the now defunct dhb wiggle brand , so good i bought a few pairs on sale before they ceased trading .You can still get them but only with laces and a bit steep as a 1st foray into shoes

One advantage of physical shops, for sure- try before you buy (if they have your potential sizes in stock).

Shoes I think you really need to try on and find a last shape that suits your foot
My feet get on with Shimano Shoes, but I have some Gaerne Boots that are lace up and have cleats.
A bit like we was saying about Shimano parts in another thread, for me it is usually sensibly priced and good quality.

I'm currently wearing my shimano MW702 booties, because its winter, wet and cold.
In summer i have some ancient Shimano shoes that someone from Cyclechat gave me, they really need replacing and i've been looking at the various Shiamno XC1s

My impulsive brain says urgh velcro, but rational brain says, velcro has been fine for years on your other cycling shoes.

I think theyre currently cheaper the the Defaffalon equivalents.

I was happy with Shimano until I tried Lake, the issue is cost. I also spent money on a bike fit, which includes getting the cleats positioned properly, that has been a big benefit. Personally I’d only buy shoes on line if I’d already tried them.
