BTW, when I started riding as an adult that road, as you can see, has a definite kerb at either side. I was overtaken, at speed, by some **** in a Xantia, not exactly a small car? I never ride that now in anything less than primary.
Always reminds me of the errors newbies can make out of ignorance of defensive riding.

I have been wondering recently. When you are against the traffic on a shared use path, is it courteous to turn off your front light, so as not to distract drivers?

I don't switch my car's headlights off[1] when on a single carriageway road, so I don't see why I'd do that on a contraflow path.

Obviously we're talking about lights on the bike that are properly mounted so that they make me visible (hopefully), but don't dazzle.

If the path is crossed at any point by driveways, side roads, I'd advise strongly against switching your bike lights off, fwiw.

[1] I'm not being entirely facetious here - I've seen some appallingly poorly adjusted car headlights recently - much more noticeable with the very powerful front lights fitted to, say, Audis lately.
