I've got the week off and thought of cycling up to Fen Drayton Lakes near St Ives - does anyone know if it's possible yet to cycle along the route of the new guided busway from Histon to St Ives? Can't get any up to date info from the web. Should be a decent route once it's (finally) opened!

This morning there were some guys testing the lights on the exit onto Milton rd, so presume won't be far long now!

The cycle-path has been open for ages but being finished is another matter.

Anyway, at the moment you have two choices:

1) You can ride on the nice smooth concrete bit that apparently will someday take buses. This is particularly good fun when there is a strong cross-wind.

2) You can ride on the cycle-path which is a cindered-track and is okay. They have said that they will eventually tarmac it up to Swavesey.

The track is a bit prone to flooding at Fen Drayton but that shouldn't be a problem at the moment.

Great stuff- sounds do-able. The concrete track sounds like an interesting challenge!

Thanks for the replies.

Last time they wanted to test some buses on a section they put out a lot of notices because it is so popular with cyclists. Look out for the concrete blocks near road junctions - if they are in place you are extremely unlikely to meet a bus (coulda come from the other end though!).

At the beginning of May the Council will begin adding a blacktop surface to the cycleway between Swavesey and Milton Road

It's be a shame when they open it to buses.

Cycled from St Ives as far as CRC a fortnight ago. Riding the concrete bus tracks took some concentrating though; reasonably high kerb one side and a drop the other into the middle recess which could knacker a wheel no problem. The cinder track is ok heading toward town but at the St Ives end it was a bit dodgy on my hybrid. Hard standing, as mentioned above is planned for certain sections at some point; there again buses were planned too

Shouldn't laugh when its costs have soared to £181 mil the last time I looked.

Yes, those pesky concrete beams do take some concentration. If we are lucky, they might just give up and fill in the central grassy part with more luverly smooth concrete, then we'll have our very own wide, two way, super-cycle-highway. Boris would be so jealous.

£181 mil. I wonder each resident's share is ? Eek, 103892 residents over 16yrs in South Cambs in 2001. That's £1742 each.

No experience in the construction industry but surely it would've cost just a fraction of that amount to have laid tarmac and hard standing for what in all probability will be a hi-tec cycle and walkway if we're not careful.

And these don't help either!!
