My view is that it's got even more to do with its being a FLAT country.

Ages ago I also mentioned that Dutch junior schools do not have school dinners and most kids are obliged to go home for lunch. After cycling to school and back twice a day (because other alternatives are not fesible in a school dinner hour), the habit of getting on a bike tends to stick.

My experience of staying in the Austrian Tyrol suggest that flat has nothing to do with it, there are lots of cyclist there as well, but flat it ain't...
