I want my roadside memorial to be a speed camera.

I think they are a bit ghoulish and counter-productive. Why don't we have white cars, motorbikes and pedestrians too?

Well, we already have half dead bunches of flowers, teedy bears and photographs for those.

I think the ghost bike idea is quite clever and a good visual reminder..

..that cycling is lethally dangerous and only suitable for mad men?

There's one at the junction of Kingsland Road and Middleton Road in East London. It is certainly a very striking image.

Anything that reminds roadusers of the consequences of their actions is a good thing in my book. Doesn't RoadPeace do something similar with placards at the scenes of fatal road crashes?

No - that drivers need to be aware of their responsibilities when behind the wheel of their vehicle

I ride the Devils Dyke road all the time. Only recently went by in a way in which I could see the sign on it, I originally thought it was just an abandoned bike:blush:

Surey anything that reminds drivers of the responsibility they have to ALL road users is worthwhile.

If i see flowers at the side of the road, i dont assume the pedestrian / driver that was killed there was a madman.

At Skegness, theres a memorial stone at the point where some family members (children included IIRC) were killed by a bus. I dont assume they were madmen for being pedestrians.

There are countless memorials...they serve one main purpose, the famiies attempt to mark someones passing. But they also remind me, and hopefully countless others, that life can hang by a thread. A reminder of the possible consequences of our actions as drivers, can ony be a good one.

I sympathise with the reasons people place them, but I can't help feeling that the message most people are going to take away is that cycling is dangerous.

OK it is a long time since this thread had a post in it , but on the way into work this morning I noticed a Ghost bike on the canal towpath at Andrews Road right by the gasholders in hackney. I know it is a recent addition as it wasn't there on Friday.

Does anybody know why it is there?

Have a guess .

I know it is because a cyclist died but there are no reports of anything at this location. I wondered if anybody knew or whether I should let somebody know that the missing one might well be here. there are a few locations local to that spot where it could have come from.
