Speaking of Wagner, does anyone else loathe opera music?
God knows I've tried over the years, but once the overture's finished and they start that dreadful singing I'm out.
And the 'acting'!
I'd sooner listen to U2.
Whilst I kind-of agree and (also) dislike the warbly style of singing. But having said that, if you avoid most of the late romantic and italian opera, there's some fabulous early and very modern stuff.
Early stuff - Purcell & Montiverdi are great - anything with Emma Kirkby singing - and that's proper singing not "opera" awfulness.
And Philip Glass for the very modern melodic stuff. Ahknaten, or Satyagraha (saw stunning EnO version), or Einstein on the beach for something a bit way out.
And even with opera opera, Magic Flute, Tales of Hoffman, or Der Freishutz are great fun. As is The Mikado for that matter.
But I still can't sit through Wagner
