Cycling - safety in numbers - what about for cars?

I was eating my lunch and mind ambling ... when I wondered if there are any statistics on whether increasing numbers of cyclists has any affect on the safety of motorist or the number of motorist/motorist collisions and the nature of them?

Has anyone any actual stats on this or just observations?
