I'm planning to cycle the Rhine Route (leaving 10 July 11) from Rotterdam to Basel, and then down to Morzine. I've got Vols 2 & 3 of Der Rheinradweg guides by Bikeline. The question is - is it necessary to buy any other maps for the Rhine section? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the books cover the route that you are planning to ride then there is no need to buy anything in addition. A colleague of mine swears by the Bikeline publications.

Those Esterbauer Bikeline guides are great, it is just a shame that there are more in English, can't really see why you would need more maps, unless you are planning to venture off the map.

No there is no need whatsoever to get other books for the Rhine as the Bikeline books have got the lot. The only problem you will have is choosing places for your overnight stops as there are so many excellent little villages and pretty towns, not to mention a few decent cities.

I cycled it the other way round from Mulhouse to Rotterdam ( with a side trip up and down the Mosel) in 2006. I would recommend that, if you have time that you should pop up the Mosel for at least a couple of days!
I have used the bikeline bookd extensively and they have lots of info and are excellent.

The only thing that I have found with them is that the maps are not clear enough on roads which are not marked as the cycle route. But you just have to be careful. If you are camping you should be aware that there are generally more camp sites than are shown in the Bikeline books.

I also found a satnav useful when I got lost in some of the big cities -- I have a garmin Nuvi 250W -- which has about 4 hours life but I only use it when travelling if i find some problem -- just to confirm my actual location. it is inevitably in Cities and get mer back on route again.

I also use it in the evening when I am recharging -- to check my route for the next day. I certainly do not use it instead of a good map! It is often very usfull when I am trying to find the camp site at the end of a days journey!
