Cyclist Knocked Off In Twickenham

Drove to Twickenham and back today – saw a pretty painful one (at the junction of Whitton Road & London Road close to Twickenham Station for those that know it) and then an odd one on the way home.

The serious one in Twickenham happened just in front of me. Cyclist was filtering up the inside of queuing traffic, using a cycle lane to get to the ASL. The passenger in the lead car decided to jump out at the lights and presumably didn’t check the mirror. Opened the door right into him as he passed – poor chap went flying. He was helped up immediately by a passer-by and the passenger who’d opened the door into his path. He looked pretty shaken but in one piece – sitting on the kerb and talking. The driver and passenger looked genuinely concerned... hope he makes a full recovery!

On the M3 on the way back down south, the traffic slowed just before J3 – pootled along in first/second for five mins until we got to the cause a few miles past the junction – 3 police cars and a chap on a bicycle (who i can only presume they had pulled over on the motorway) – first time I’ve seen that!!

I wonder if someone jumped the lights there - otherwise I can't see too many reasons for a bike to get hit there (other than a close overtake!). I'd imagine with the sixth form college round the back there are quite a few cyclists, in addition to the others that have always been there (I grew up in the area and remember, in Teddington in particular, lots of mums riding upright bikes with baskets!).

It is a pity that most cycle lanes are almost designed for these types of accidents, leading up on the left to the ASL. Bit bl**dy stupid opening the door without checking the mirror first though - after all, so many drivers say we should be in the cycle lane ........

Cyclist on the M3 is a new one on me though!

I saw a guy cycling on the M271 in Southampton a few weeks back.
It's only a short stretch of motorway and I thought he'd go off at the first junction after realising his mistake.
Nope, he carried on up the motorway.
Strange sight!

There was a story in the local rag the other day about a man parked his car on the platform of a rural railway station - because he thought it was the carpark. So with that level of breathtaking stupidity present in rural Hampshire, a bicycle on the M3 doesn't surprise me! He probably thought the hard shoulder was a lovely extra-wide cycle path.

Rest easy Mr X, our collective IQ holds steady. J3 is in Surrey.

Something similar happened round here a couple of years ago - a motorist had driven his car onto a level crossing and then turned onto the railway line. His sat nav told him to do it, so he did.

Hope the cyclist knocked off is alright.

A few years ago it was legal to in California to cycle along Highway 101 between two junctions - it was because it was impossible to get around by bicycle any other way between those two junctions. I cycled it once: never agin. There were hugge trucks howling past my elbow and all sorts of glass, garbage and bits of metal and tyres all over the place. Impressive levels of pollution too.

D'ya know, I can think of many many roads that I'd rather not cycle on ahead of the M271. Check out its writeup here

More to the point, and ignoring the fact it's illegal, why would you WANT to cycle on a motorway?

There are more pleasant ways to die, methinks!
