Go with the Boardman you'll never regret it, I've yet to have struggled up hills with it (I live in a very steep hilly area) or found it wanting on the flat, it's a great bike for the price.
The brakes take a little while for the pads to bed in, but once they do, they stop you with authority, I never had a problem setting mine up either, like others claim to have had.
Has all the holes to mount a rack and mudguards too, so no problems there.
I too was in the same situation as you on opting for which bike, took me a few test rides (other brands) and a lot of review reading before the Boardman ticked all the right box's I was after, after a years worth of use I can say ...
I made the right choice
