it's a strange phenomenon.... seems to happen every now and again.
You look them in the eye, they look at you back... and then they walk in front of you...

I had one on the weekend. I was on the cycle path and this woman turns into it from a side path with pram plus baby she just proceeds to walk up the path right in front of me. Her partner is on the pavement side so there's nowhere to go but between them, bit scary as they don't know I'm there. I shout at her that it's a cycle path and I could have killed the baby! Maybe a bit strong I know. All this whilst braking and swerving. She's totally unaware where she is or what she's doing and yells something back but I don't hear her.

Further down the same busy cycle path a mother allows her todler to walk right across it and all she says is oh be careful to the child. How about not letting the child walk on the cycle path in the first place?

They take no responsibility for their own safety or that of their children.

On a cycle path on my commute home there are always dog walkers as it has grass to one side.
Doesn't bother me, most move away onto grass.
One time a woman wasn't paying attention, her dog was making a dash for the grass, she was trying to make the dog sit still (right in the middle of the lane) but the dog could see me hurtling towards it and wanted off. i think the penny dropped when she finally saw me....who said animals are dumb

I'm afraid pedestrians have every right to walk on the cycle part of a shared path, and I suspect, even on a dedicated cycle path. Yes, it's annoying when they wander across, but it is us cyclists who must stay on our bit. If you're not prepared to cycle along in a way that allows you to give way safely to pedestrians (IE slowly and covering the brakes), use the road. Peds who don't also cycle are not used to having to think about where they walk, unless it's to cross the road, and I'm sure very often they have no idea they are on a cycle path, even if it's well signed. Whenever my Mum comes to visit and we walk along the river, I have to remind her to keep to one side - she's not stupid, or willfully ignorant, she's just not used to shared paths.

That said, I've said things before now, usually along the lines of "watch where you're going!" as they step out in front of me...

What's the collective noun for pedestrians? I encountered a "selfish" (or maybe a "stupid") of peds at the weekend. Three women started to cross the road, saw me, stopped, then went again just as I got to them. They seemed surprised when I weaved through and cursed instead of slamming on the anchors... It was downhill on Leith Walk and I was really moving!

It could be worse. She could have had a shopping trolley as well...!!

sorry magnatom but every time i see her scuttle across when she finally spots you i end up on the floor.

you need to stop using the cloaking device at this junction!

As for shared cycle paths - I avoid them when going any harder than out for a pootle. Often other 2 wheeled warriors can be as bad as the peds. (and don't mention dogs or i might go off on one)

Mags that was bloody awful and very similar to the three peds who ran in front of me from the other side of the road just over three years ago. They didn't see me either.Wish I had got my 'accident' on camera.
