The thing that worries me is when they let their kids run all over the railway platforms with no safety harnesses.

And they'll find someone else to pin the blame on when it all goes tits up, aided and abetted by some scum sucking no win no fee ambulance chaser. Never mind the trauma caused to any other party involved.

What's the collective noun for pedestrians? I encountered a "selfish" (or maybe a "stupid") of peds at the weekend. Three women started to cross the road, saw me, stopped, then went again just as I got to them. They seemed surprised when I weaved through and cursed instead of slamming on the anchors... It was downhill on Leith Walk and I was really moving!

Leith Walk is looking lethal (or should that be Leithal ?) these days with some horrendous sunken drains / potholes and suchlike caused by some very poorly-filled tramworking holes. I've only ever gone down it from about half-way, and that was quite an experience as I tried to avoid the holes, never mind the pedestrians crossing without looking ! Mind you, many of them are 'well-refreshed' or worse so I don't suppose they even realise they're on the road....

True enough... it's survival of the fittest there nowadays!

Been thinking about this for a while in relation to cyclists who "don't stop" at zebra crossings.

Time and time again I see the ped look my way. I think I've been seen, ease and cover brakes intending to pass behind them. All's well until they step off the kerb. Then they spot me for real and hesitate, dance a jig, make stop signals, shout abuse and look panicked 'cos I've "ignored" them!

They then go off and complain about the bl**dy cyclist who nearly mowed them down.

Yeah I think that's the only place where I've had somebody deliberately swerve at me.

Hold up - the ped may not realise you're "covering the brakes" - they might see someone blithely cruising towards them, intent on not stopping. I certainly wouldn't step off the kerb if a car didn't look to be slowing down sufficiently.

Maybe you need to scrub some more speed off, so they can see you're going dead slow, or stop? I know this comes across as a criticism of your particular riding style (I guess it is to an extent) but I think it's also a general misconception that pedestrians (and other road users) can divine a cyclist's benign intentions just by them stopping pedalling.

Yes, I think it's unfair to expect a pedestrian to be able to spot a cyclist covering their brakes. And to be strict, if someone is on the crossing, you shouldn't past behind them until they are across (although I'm sure we all do). There is one zebra crossing I come to on a regualr basis, and I make a point of making it obvious I'm slowing and waving people across.

I would only do it at slow speed - more or less just to stop me actually stalling. But I'm just as happy to actually stop and wait. I wouldn't ai behind someone and go for it at full tilt (even though my full tilt is fairly slow!)

The thing which gives me the hump about peds was the article in the metro about cyclists. Why couldn't we have one about cyclists moans esp towards the millions of stupid things peds do.
