hello all

i am looking to invest in a dahon folding bike. i have an 8 mile each way commute to the train station and have to negotiate a couple of steep hills so varied gearing will be required. i would love a speed pro but £1200+ is way over budget. i want something of that size as storage at home and on the train is limited. i have considered buying second hand as many £££s can be saved but do you need receipt of purchase for warranty purposes. i am only worried about the frame but i am sure the warranty for this part is 5 years. i would hate to spend 5-6 hundred quid for the frame to go.

thanks

Hi paul

My experience of Dahon wasn't great; the folding mechanism was constantly working loose. For £5-600 I would be looking for a Brompton.

Same experience with folding mech. Check out the availability of spares too, Dahon getting better in the UK but has miles to go to match somewhere like SJSC who stock every last nut and bolt which makes servicing and repairs much easier. Plus the resale value of the Brompt will be better. Brompt also the smallest fold.

We own a Speed-Pro, a Boardwalk, we had two but I sold one when I stopped using two wheels, and a Matrix-V, currently for sale.

The fold clamp has an adjuster to take up any slack. All of our Dahons needed a quarter turn or so on this after a few hundred miles. After that only my Speed-Pro needed another quarter turn and that after several thousand miles. The remaining Boardwalk and Matrix-V have covered a smaller mileage so maybe when their mileage is higher they'll need adjusting.

My wife rides the Boardwalk and speed=Pro, so I make it part of my maintenance regime to check the fold clamp.
