Hello. Bit new to all this, but have only put 7 miles on my new bike and the chainset looks like this!
Been sold a duffer?

They are supposed to like that.
Though the tooth in picture over the 110mm looks flat on top I could be wrong.

Never feel silly for asking a question. We all started off knowing the same about bikes - Nothing.

Some of us still know nothing

I had problems with the chain coming off the old PDQ I picked up off eBay last week. First impression was that the chain was not routed through the idler pulley correctly (it wasn't) but once the chain was out of the way I noticed that I also had a somewhat asymmetric chainring! Has anyone any idea what this chainring might be made from - it is non metallic and appears to be a plastic composite of same type? I guess it was quite old - maybe the material didn't catch on due to lack of strength. It was very light.
Not really an issue as I was going to swap the chainset for shorter cranks anyway.
