Darn pesky kids have trojaned my pc.

Looking for games and playing them, they found a nasty site which has dumped a load of malware on my pc.

One, a trojan, AVG found and removed, though it popped up again later so I might need to tackle that seperately. First though, I'm getting some trojan adware popping up false security messages about win32.brontock. I'm having real trouble removing this. I've now found the files, processes and registry entries and have downloaded a malware removal tool to do the job. It finds the stuff but crashes in the removal process.

In the meantime, the computer is running like a dog. IE won't run without crashing and I'm using Outlook for web browsing: Note to self, download and install another browser for future IE issues. Performance is crazily up and down which I think is down to this rogue trojan process, al in all not good.

All useful suggestions welcomed.

I thought IE alway behaved that way...

Use Firefox, much safer.

When trying to remove the trojan make sure you have booted into safe mode first.

Ahh no. I haven't got the Brontok worm, it's a security spoof saying I have to lure me into downloading further trojans.

I don't have many apps on my PC and those that I do, I have on disk. I keep all files (photos, docs, spreadsheets) on a seperate hard drive.

The PC runs without any anti virus, just the inbuilt firewall. Miles faster as its not scanning everything all the time. When it actually catches a cold or starts to run slow, I'll run a diagnostics program on it. If that fails to fix, then clean install of Windows and any installed apps takes half an hour.

Job done. Best to keep everything out of harms way, then you don't have to worry too much.

I wont repeat the instructions above, but I will say this :

You should not let your kids have/use an administrator account. If you do, this will happen again and again.

If you had only given your kids normal user rights (as recommended by Microsoft) this most likely would not have happened.

Yep - our kids keep getting annoyed at asking us to allow certain things but that happened after we had a virus thanks to their browsing. We've given them an old computer too to muck up. It seems to take them a little while before they get around to telling us that anything is wrong on the computer too.

try more than one malware removal tool. Spybot works quite well. Not sure which one you used? Failing that, it's a complete re-install. Not an install over, a format and start again.
Install windows over itself and it's likely to leave the bad stuff where it is.

Turn of the restore feature, reboot in safe mode and then scan, reason to why some virus "keep" coming back is because they are backed up by Windows.
Use Firefox and install Addblock Plus which is a free addon, all so any other addons that could help protect the PC, I use firefox and so do my kids after I told them IE is a load of rubbish and they like some of the extra addons
