Picked this up an holiday and although too small for me I intend to use it (longer seatpost and stem need to be purchased....though it seems such a shame to lose the original componants). If anybody has any idea of the date please let me know. It needs a fair bit of work done to it before it is ridable.

It has some nice cotterpin cranks (hope these are reliable) and the older 27 1/4 wheels (Again I can replace this will some brilliant 700c wheels but it seems such a shame to lose the original componants) along with centre pull weinnaman (bad spelling sorry) brakes.

I hope I can find the spare parts I need for this bike to fit me whilst using original componants, otherwise I may sell it on rather than bastardise it though I have no idea what it is worth.

Let me know if the bike looks like a little red cross in a small white box, more pictures to come after I have laboured on the dawes

forgot to add, the gearing is simplex I believe, which has a rather cool piston operated front mech.

Oh and what colour bar tape do you all think? The saddle going on it will be a black rolls so black seems the obvious choice - but I already have a supply of yellow blue and pink so yellow is the other option!

What's wrong with "bastardising" it? If you're making it a better bike for your purposes there's nothing wrong with that!

You don't have to throw the original components away, so you can sell them with the bike (or put the bike back to how it was keeping the new components) if and when you come to sell.

How much did you pay then?

1971/early 70s is the best date I can put on the bike so far

Bobby dazzler. If Dawes still made bikes like that, I'd send some money their way. I'd go with cloth bar tape (or bare, highly polished alloy bars) every time for a sixties / seventies bike. It feels nice, there's a good chance it's what would have been on there originally and it's cheap as. My LBS has ordered some for my Carlton Circuit for £2.50 a roll.

That bike really is too small for you raising the bars and seat will mess up the handling and look wrong.

What you need to do is pass it on to me

PS it looks great good luck with the project.

It is more or less ridable now, just need to adjust the gearing a little so that it is impossible to shift the chain between the largest sprocket and the wheel. Bit of bar tape and voila. Goldie, I think you are right about the bar tape. I am considering selling this as using a dawes as a hack does seem a bit....wrong... but I have yet to decide. Still all looks original apart from the tyres - could always get a £20 pair off ebay to make it look more original though

I do love that green though....if I ever get a bike resprayed it shall almost certainly be this green!

WRT the bike ........... £100 that's plenty. The seat stay above the dropout appears very rusty. I would have said £20-30 tops.

I don't think it's wrong. A bike should be used, and the better the bike, the more it deserves to be used. A tourer is a good everyday ride - it'll be solidly built, and nicely old, so not all that eyecatching for thieves. I think it's lovely.

I'm sure you could find a touch up paint for the odd rusty spot, if you wanted to - in fact it looks like you might (in the right sort of shop) find a nail varnish that would do the trick.

I'll resize it yer, and I'm not sure you would get much of a second hand bike, especially one with a very respectable name for £20-£30......chances are this would sell on for £150 at least, possibly more if sold in the right places. there are a few patches of rust but I definately wouldn't go as far as to say very rusty.

With the nail varnish Arch...do you mean clear or a green? Regarding the hammerite can you get it a similar colour to the paint and is the stuff expensive?

cheers

Need to be carefull with hammerite.Sometimes it doesnt like sticking to the surrounding original paint. Its good stuff but try a tiny bit first.
