Another variant - from Hoddesden go through Stanstead Abbots and Much Hadham to Clavering, where you pick up sustrans route 11 to Ickleton, Duxford and Cambridge. A little bit less direct than the B1368 but a very nice route.
Thanx for both your suggestions. Indeed after the A10 junction with the London Orbital(not too scary) and the A10 carriageway to Hoddesdon(more scary) the Stanstead Abbots and Much Hadham bit was great. Then on to North Norfolk via Saffron Walden and Newmarket. A nice jaunt through the night with moonlight and tailwind, not to mention several decent pubs.
Although next time more planning will occur and less luggage to haul, all as Greater Anglia railways are proper expensive without pre-booking.
been a while since i been down that way but i would say head up into Hertfordshire via st albans head up to whellum green, Hatfield, Stevenage, bishop stortford then its the A505 past the Duxford war museum ( dont go on a bank holls as the road will be chocker block past the museum.) then straight up to cambridge
