There was quite a good drama thing on telly a few years back called the Missing Postman where the hero cycles up to his work's gates one morning, thinks sod it, and just carries on all over the country. I remember it was rather good and I'm often tempted to do the same. This is from the write up..

As he makes his final collection from the postbox in the small seaside town where he lives, he decides to deliver it himself, by hand, no matter the destination. Mounting his trusty bicycle, he sets off on what proves to be an odyssey of self-discovery.

I have actually done exactly that. It was a couple of years ago. Lovely warm sunny morning. I left home at 7.30am as usual to cycle to work. I thought sod it and decided to do a 100 miler in the countryside instead. Called up work to say I was taking the day off. I didn't need to give an excuse being a boss.

One day, a few years ago, I had ridden about 24 of my 27km commute to work, when I realised that the change of work clothes I'd meant to bring with me weren't actually with me! :cursing: So I turned around, rode the remaining 24km home, picked up the clothes, then rode to work, making the commute about 75km instead of 27 . I really should have just taken the day off, silly me.

I used to be able to do this a fair bit when I was a Subbie ( SC60 Sub-Contractor) After finishing a project it could be a day or two before the next set of plans arrived on my bench and its the done thing to finish a shop display at least a day before the fitting teams need it, so my area of workshop floor would still be full. First time I actually spoke to the boss at lunchtime saying "there's not much point me being here doing nowt, mind if I go now and have a ride out and a beer Mark" to which he replied " yeah Nige have one for me I've got a meeting with the designers this afternoon so the next jobs probably not for a couple of days" After a while he would say to me to take a day off if I wanted the evening before. I still miss this job but not the hours (very often 12-16 hour days sometimes 7 days a week on a big fit-out)

I do get tempted. Has anyone kept on cycling on and not turned up to work because your enjoying the weather and you ride?
No because I need a job to pay for the cycling stuff  and the private healthcare to cover the injuries caused by cycling!

Used to get a fair old wedge back at end of year. Usual Tax office chat went
Petrol receipts- Don't drive
B+B receipts- If I stop away the firm pays
Meal receipts- The firm gives us £25 a day expenses and they claim it, we just sign for it
Tools- Yeah bought some not much- Taxman "I'll just give you the standard basic allowance then"
Safety gear and work clothes- Bought some not much- "basic again then"-yeah
Anything else -No
TAX INSPECTOR- " Well that's the fastest SC60 claim I've ever done. Goodbye Sir"
4 Weeks later a cheque for 2 1/2 grand arrives,
