Pay attention at the back. The op was running chkdsk from a prompt within the restore partition which would of course be read only. Hence the suggestions that they specifically specify the c drive

You are an irritating poster, i've crossed you twice already, chipping in random stuff for the sake of it.Where does write protection come into this?

Your knowledge of pc stuff is aparently only programmer related, programmers are not the most knowledgeable people around. They may be fine at programming but what else can they do?
I work with a programmer, doesn't have much in the way of knowledge about windows.

What windows qualifications do you have? what exams have you passed?

You talk down to people, which i find irritating.

Tell me what did i say wrong?I point out the write protection stuff looks odd, and that check disk checks and fixes hard drive errors, yet you have to come in and make a comment, why?Is any of my statement wrong, or did you just feel the need to but in?

The last time you were ranting on about hard drives failing after weeks, convinced that you were correct, even though logic and reality says the total opposite.

If hard drives failed to the extent you think they do no company would make hard drives.

This is why i question what you do actually know, as you are coming out with some bizarre stuff.

And i deal with hundreds of computers not just a couple.

Check post 13 where the OP admits they are check disking from the restore partition and didn't specify the drive.
Am I to understand that you're a member of an IT department ?
The matter of harddrive life expectancy is recognizing that average life expectancy applies to the business as a whole not to taking a gamble with important data on the basis that statistically your harddrive should have lasted longer than it did. Try persuading a fire safety officer that statistics show that the low probability of a house fire justifies not installing smoke alarms.
Having a windows qualificaton means following procedures to restore the backups you made as a result of your training to the corrupted/replaced harddrive which should not contain importamt data as specified in company procedures. The home environment on the other hand seems to revolve around wishful thinking and little interest in anything relating to backup or basic housekeeping as that does not interest the average user until they lose everything.

Why would it say the above for a hard drive?

Write protected is something i'd relate to a removable drive?Usb stick?

What do you have plugged into the laptop at the moment?usb hard drive, a usb stick?

If you have a usb stick in there or sd cards remove them and try again.

Chkdsk is for hard drive repair, in other words no one is asking you to do reinstalls, or find install cds at the moment.

I'm just reporting what it says, I have no idea otherwise, nothing is plugged in and no CDs/USB sticks either.
