When in the US a couple of years ago I got chatting to chap in a bar. He did 3 seasons on the Crab boats. I said judging by the tv shows it's real hard, dangerous work. He said the tv show only show the nice bits, but it's very good money.... Said that you have never felt cold like 'At sea. Alaskan' Cold. And a good few of the deck hands have less then 10 fingers, due to accidents..

Been watching all of this series and earlier on I was wondering about the up coming death of one of them and was unsure about wanting to watch it.
Have watched them all I was pleased with how it was handled, it was handled with dignity and was touching at times , surprisingly the scene with all the guys around the table brought a tear to my eye.

I've never missed a single episode and neither has the Mrs ... Deadliest catch is one of the few shows I'll sit and watch from start to finish.
It was Phil Harris who passed away on the 9th of Febuary this year due to a double stroke, he'll be sadly missed from the show too, the risks are huge, but the payouts are even bigger. $52.000 Dollars per deck hand for three months work, that's if you don't value your life much!

Excellent program although i havnt watched the latest series. Ive watched so many of the previous ones, i've done it to death a bit.
I don't know how old the skipper was but he did look stressed a lot of the time...a time bomb waiting to go off perhaps. Sad...i saw a trailer for the show after he'd died and i'm not sure i wanted to watch it either.
