After a very bad few day's, our cat was killed by a car,
we have made the decision to get a dog instead, problem is what breed ??

There are no young children in the house, just Myself, the Wife and our 15yr old Son, oldest only comes home from Uni occasionally.

We think we would like a puppy, just so we could train it properly from a young age.

Any advice ?? What have you got ??

~First of all I am so sorry to hear about your cat, that is very sad:sad:

I have a staffordshire bull terrier, my second one. They are very honest dogs, a bit mad, but I love them.

It really depends I suppose, on allergies, do you want alot of hairs being cast? Some dogs cast more than others.

How far do you want to walk the dog? some need more walking than others.

Size of dog too, how big is your home? Do you have a large garden?

One from a rescue centre?

There's loads of good dogs needing good homes and the centre should be helpful with choosing the right one for you and your circumstances based on the dogs needs and temperament.

Miniature Schnauzer, bit stupid but lovely dogs.

Really sorry to hear about the cat! ;)

A Heinz 57? Then at least you might be able to get a mix of all the ones you are considering!

Looking into getting a dog myself once this house move goes through, suppose I need to get myself checked by the docs first though, recently developed asthma which is likely to be caused by an allergy to my cat. Hoping I will be ok with dogs, don't want to aggravate it further.. Suppose otherwise my only option will be a poodle or poodle cross which I'm not to keen on...

But they're really cute, I know a labradoodle vaguely. It's shaped like a labrador, behaves like a lab, but has fine wavy hair in shades of gold and chocolate brown.

Cat fur makes my nose run and eyes water but I'm fine with dogs. Rabbits too, which is odd as I would have thought their fur would be similar to cats.

Rescue centre/animal sanctuary is a good idea. They get to know the dogs well and you can spend time with them before you agree to take them.

Actually, we did have a blind lady at work that did have a labradoodle which was rather cute! Just want to get myself tested before committing, would feel awful for myself and the dog if I had to give it up after a short while, so I'd rather find out first!

I would like a golden retreiver again one day, I had one for 14 years, best friend I ever had, lots of fun, great temperment and a proper sized dig not a rodent.

Also would recommend an English cocker spanial...although almost rodent in size they are totally bonkers and fun, and lap dog but they look like a real dog and not a toy...

..both of those are great around kids..both are gun dogs, although niether of mine ever fetched a single stick!
