"Demotorization" - Hope for the future?

Saw this article from the Los Angeles Times, suggesting that american young people are going off car ownership.

Is this a sign of hope?

What would the same survey say if done in the UK?

Our country is dominated by the motorcar, pedestrians and cyclists are at best a cursory afterthought in the design process. However, America is worse, and it has the additional problem in that the land area is huge, with very sparsely populated areas inbetween. To make matters worse, the cities and population are oriented towards the motorcar.

However, there is hope.
