Of to Amsterdam next week, cannot decide which bike to take, road or mtb we are starting at the hook and going halfway on the coast road, then we want to go inland and follow the canals into Amsterdam, not sure what the roads or paths are like, it's a nice slowish ride with freinds who do not really cycle a lot, i would like to take the road bike but with 23c tyres would they cope. Advice from anybody who has done this would be very helpfull.

For this route a road bike should be fine. Follow the LF routes for quiet or no traffic.

Did this exact trip at easter this year on road bike with 23c tyres no problem. Coastal path is small gravel like tarmac and cycle paths to amsterdam involve brick blocks. No hills no lumps n bumps. Hope you enjoy

There are big hills in the Netherlands ... every time a bridge crossed a canal! I did a tour from Amsterdam to Emden and back via the Verluwe National Park, including the climb to Posbank above Arnhem to 120m, carrying camping gear on the Brommy. No problem!
