what is the best way for getting fitter for longer distance riding at the moment its taking me 1.45 to do 20miles with 70% off road at the end i'm aiming for 5 times that.

Sorry to state the obvious but I think the best way is practice, more 20 milers or further but remember to give your body a break to recover.

Stamina training consists of exercising where the relavent muscles are alternating ( one minute at a time ) in and out of Lactic and aerobic.

Riding your bike at a harder than moderate intensity should do the business.

Uphill torture followed by downhill relaxation.

On the flat, high speed / low speed intervals.
