I've been looking online for maps which indicate area boundaries, but without success. I'm not even sure what I'm looking for - is it council boundaries or parish boundaries, or something else?

My particular interest is in Nottingham (example, where's the boundary between Sherwood and Daybrook?), to put it in London terms I guess it would be the boundary between, say, Deptford and New Cross.

Is there a definitive map somewhere?

All councils have definitive maps. You might have to go in to the council offices to look at them though.

You can go on Bing maps and select Ordnance Survey maps. If you zoom in enough, you will get to 1:25:000 scale which shows a lot of detail and might help you.

Derby.
As far as I can see, OpenStreetMap only goes down as far as district. So for my area, it'll show the boundary between Derby City and South Derbyshire, but not Littleover and Mickleover.

EDIT: It also seems to show parish boundaries. But Derby doesn't have those.

Election-maps only shows parliamentary boundaries. Openstreetmap shows the City boundary, but not areas within the City.

I have a 1:50000 OS map which doesn't show the detail I'm after, but I'll check out the 1:25000 (can't work out how to get it on Bing tho'?)

Google maps is pretty good for that kind of thing — type Littleover into the search and it'll draw a red dotted line around the area. It'll do it for the first half of a postcode too.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Is it ward boundaries you're after? I'd start on the Nottingham City Council website.

Election-maps only shows parliamentary boundaries.
They'll also have to show Parish Boundries, where Parish Council Elections are held, as well as Ward Boundaries. Different to the Parlimentary Constituancy Boundry. And in some cases the three may even overlap.
You have Postcode boundries as well as Town & Borough to consider.
