Cats cecome accustomed to the routine of the house and know the events that precede feeding.
It isn't just cats. We had a guinea pig (Chocca, she was chocolate brown) that lived indoors in the winter, as the shed was damp and cold. She lived in my sister's room upstairs. Every night, Mum was the last to bed, and went around in her routine, switching off living room lights, filling hot water bottle, grabbing a final salad snack for Chocca, turning off kitchen lights, coming upstairs and giving Chocca said salad. Chocca started to whistle at the sound of the kitchen light going off.
And she used to whistle when she heard my Dad's footsteps coming back from the shops, for the same anticipating-a-feed reason.
