you drive in a car park say Asda or BNQ.
Everything else is covered but can you do it without insurance.
Its private lane however I have read conflicting answers on the internet. Some say its fine others say if its connected to a public road its classed as a public place under the road traffic act.

Yes you do. Your car would have had to travel on a road to get there i presume but these places are also covered under the Road Traffic Act for the purpose of an accident therefore insurance is needed at all times.

I would of said yes as the private land doesn't belong to you. If you were to hit another car or bollard or caused any damage to another persons property in the said car park u would be in the shoot

Hill Wimp's right.

Under s143 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to use (or permit to be used) a motor vehicle on a road or other public place when there is not in force in relation to the use of the vehicle such a policy of insurance in respect of third party risks as complies with the Road Traffic Act.

The supermarket car park falls under 'other public place'.

What about a car park where they drop barriers to restrict access when closed?

Presumably you'll be able to access and exit said car park as a member of the public? In which case, I'd say you still need insurance.

However, it's best to check with your local traffic plod rather than find yourself in a situation where you're having to explain to a cop that you thought it was okay because some guy on the internet said so!

Don't forget, if you end up being charged with driving without insurance, your mum will also be charged with permitting the vehicle to be used without insurance too. And you don't want to pìss off your mum...

Whether private or public, I think it is still best to have your car insured. You'll never know what will happen in the next minutes. Sometimes, even if you parked your car in the right spot, there are still irresponsible drivers that will hit you and leave your car with dents and run off! If the car isn't your mum's car, I think you can get a non owners auto insurance from reputable car insurance companies.
