Bimble

Bimbling along ...
I know a lot of town councils have made their museums and galleries free to enter in order to increase visitor numbers. I'm not sure if it has helped at all and wondered if any of you guys actually visit galleries and museums (locally or when you're travelling) and if so which ones you like the best and why?

Mini natural history in Tring is great. Love the transport museum and duxford too.

I took my daughter to the Ashmolean Museum on Sunday. We also regularly visit the history museum and Pitt Rivers every summer because they are close by and free. My daughter enjoys museums and galleries but my son has to be dragged around.

I like the Photographer's Gallery (W1F 7LW), I drop in there quite frequently. Plenty of other galleries in London which are good for just dropping into like the Whitechapel (haven't been over there for a while).

I've never been to the Horniman- this thread has reminded me I need to go.

Years ago I visited the Musical Instrument museum in Brentford- they have all manner of mechanical musical instruments like a grand player piano with a punched card recording made by Rachmaninoff. You don't just wander around looking at stuff- there are guided tours and you get to hear the instruments.

both excellent choices. Pitt Rivers especially as it's such a hodge podge of junk and antiquities

Oxford's science museum is also rather good
