I don't know if this is the sort of documentary you are thinking of but I posted in the Cafe the other day this one; I thought it was good :-)

Cycling home from Siberia is another. Only 6 episodes, & feels a bit rushed, but it's not bad. There's probably a torrent of it somewhere.
