+1 for ditching Norton. I use MSIE which is free and works. I also use Defraggler every week and CCleaner almost daily: oh, and Chrome rather than IE.

I've not seen Advanced System Care before, Swee'pea99 - do you rate it better than CCleaner?
CCleaner seemed ok to me, but I got the impressions it was kind of resting on its laurels, whereas ASC seems to be very 'active'...regularly updated, which I take as a good sign. Maybe CCleaner's good - I couldn't say, since I haven't used it for a long time - but certainly I think ASC is excellent...I install it on friends/relatives computers as a matter of course, and they all seem very pleased with it. (Incidentally, I wouldn't bother 'upgrading' to the paid for version - I did, once, and it was nothing but trouble!)

Right, I still can't work out how to turn off Norton 360 temporarily. Can anybody help? Thank-you.

Im pretty sure you cant. It invades the system so much its almost impossible to fully get rid of without a reformat... sorta like a virus really

They're way too hi-tech for me.

I'm amazed, SloMo: I thought you'd be using an abacus!

If you're looking for a free AV program, I'd recommend Avira Antivir - it's much less of a resource hog than AVG (which seemed to get greedier and greedier with each new version, until I finally lost patience and removed it) and it's got a good reputation for actually working.

I have 56 days left on Norton 360. I'll give the free ones a crack. BTW, what happens if you try "poly pharmacy"?:hyper:

Complete chaos, I would imagine.

[ I'll fess up, Windows XP and IE6 or 7........and Office 97]

Wobbly, I feel affronted. An abacus won't keep me warm, unlike my laptop.

 But I thought you'd at the very most be using one of Mr Babbage's Thinking Engines...

Let me see...
With a prolonged period without lubrication, and many hours of calculations, perhaps Mr Babbage's "device" might generate a few watts of heat, but nothing like enough to keep my ancient, thinning bloodstream warm.

BTW, my "laptop" has about 500 volts DC wizzing about in that nutter's sitting room. Not toddler friendly! You can find the story by Googling "Aurora" and "Amity" valve amplifiers. Bonkers, but a lot of fun.
