I was in my mother's uncle's Citroen DS (1959 owned from new) when it went past 250,000 miles. The wine came out when we got back, in celebration. He sold it in 1992 to a collector when it had done just over 400,000 miles.

Yes, yes, yes! I don't like it when I notice than the changeover is soon to occur, get all giddy.......... but then forget.

This

Mind you, when I did my first ever Century ride, I nearly came off several times due to being fixated on the speedo
'twas a magical moment when that third digit flashed into view

In the days of the cyclometer you'd have been off. The dial was down by the front wheel nut with digits about 3mm high, black on silver, behind a glass panel. You needed to remember your starting mileage and do the mental arithmetic to work out how far you'd been on that ride.

Then you could go on to work out your average speed ......

3 digits plus tenths, I remember that going from 999.9 to 000.0 was quite a frequent event.

i had 3 of these strange number incidents in a week.

i pulled into the car park at work switched the engine off and looked at the speedo 64000 exactly, the same week i filled up with petrol with outlooking until it stopped filling when i looked at the pump it was exactly £40.00.then i went shopping later that week and spent exactly £30.00 in the supermarket on a number of items !!

I remember being fixated on my 'elan' speedo years ago, back when they had proper mechanical numbers. I got to 1047 miles before it got nicked.

In that respect I still prefer the mechanical readout to the digital ones today.

 Interesting that the needle was at 55mph or thereabouts when the photo was taken - a steady hand by the passenger then! ;)
