Although you already know this, for any tradesman, it is hugely better to find someone who's recommended by people you trust. One corollary to that, is once you've hired one good tradesman, they are then key to almost any other trade you could think of.
So, not just neighbours, but previously good tradesmen in other trades should give you a contact - you might even open the conversation with "do you do roofing work as well?"

A sample of one, admittedly, be we got someone to turn up for a job that we've been let down on several times by going through Rated People rather than phoning people direct.

I've found rated people a bit rubbish when I've used it, people not returning calls with quotes etc, not clearing up properly, not taking rubbish away - I wasn't around when the job was done so couldn't supervise.

Not sure about roofers but i have had electricity to shed, fencework and now a new kitchen that have cost a lot less than most tradesmen would charge because the tradesmen wanted the work and a good rating to get more work.

Round my way roofers come round and introduce themselves, point out the loose tiles I've got and offer to do it for cash while they're in the area. You haven't had one of them helpful blokes recently then?
As you're in Leeds try Art Roofing - http://artroofing.eu/ - they fixed various dodgy bits on my slate roof quickly and cheaply. It may be hard to believe but the guy did seem genuinely passionate about roofs - check the 'Roofs of the world' bit on his website - he also did a good job for some friends. York based but would be surprised if Leeds were a problem.

Our one experience has been very positive - turned up to quote, turned up for the job, did it well and tidied up after.
