Went to the LBS to ask the tech guy about upgrades today. Long story short, because the Jake has cantis I cant fit any other type of brake. Bit gutted by that, wanted better stopping power in the rain but theres no space/hardware for either Vs or Caliper.

So next I ask about changing the BB. Not as smooth as the cheap one they put on my old bike, certainly naff uphill. Asked about a Hope, but the guy says "wont fit with your cranks/chainset." Or something, I forget which.. to me this seemed like an opportunity to install the Tiagra chain set and Hope bracket like I had originally wanted and he said, yeah, should work.

I'm gonna fly up them hills!

So having some time to kill and some extra money in my pocket I decide to have a gander at the clothes. Been after some "trackies" for cycling and they had 2 pairs of Altura Winter Cruiser's left. Large and medium. I try on the L but they dont fit, and think ahh the XL should be much better as it was the biggest they make.

I bought it without trying them on assuming they'd be fine, only to get home and realise Altura's sizings aint that different. Now I dont have Chris Hoy's legs, but I couldnt get them up (f'naar!)

He said they've got some Gore stuff coming in and "come back tomorrow if you're interested". Well I am now. Wonder if he'll swap them.

Looking at the Kona Jake I think you could fit v's (there's two mounting points on the forks/ stays) but they would need a Travel Agent even then I dont think they be much better or even worse ! I think you can get canti arms which offer more efficient braking, that and better pads are probably the better options.

I think the shop will swap your trousers no problem, after all the Gore stuff will be twice the price. Its only when you want your money back shops get @rsy IME and a good shop your OK too.

As above, you can use a travel-agent or mini v-brakes. Neither are brilliant though.

Avid shorties cantilever brakes work well and use v-brake style pads but they're still not as powerfull as v's

I use koolstops here too. I guess I'm just starting to realise that a year on its dry-weather bike. Might have to start looking at that custom build after all.

He said about installing agents but that it would or could be worse than the cantis.
