I want to lower my gearing. Currently it has a 52 tooth front sprocket. I want to reduce it to about 48. Where do I get one which will fit and take a 7 speed chain?

I have a 48 tooth front chainring from a Carrera Subway 8, originally fitted with hub gear. What will happen if fit this to my 7 speed derailleur?

No problem, assuming you also have the Carrera bb. If not you should record the existing chainline on the Dahon, take the chainset off the bb and see if the Carrera one achieves a similar chainline and without clash, else you might need a new bb. I think you don't have to but you might also want to shorten the chain by a pair of links.
