According to something on the BBC Breakfast, Dorset Police have had year long crackdown on all driving offences no matter how small and no excuses accepted.
The BBC item claimed that road deaths had been reduced by half due to crackdown on mobile phone users, non-seat belt wearers etc.

If true is shows how "low level" traffic offences are more important than some Police forces think they are.

But they didn't fine most of them, they just sent them on a free drivers awareness course that meant they got no tickets or points.
As per my recently blog entry, we need to have more traffic offices on the road that fine people for trafficing offences. Then the points system will actually. Until the motorist fears the system, it won't work. And with limited officers on the road, they can get away with murder.

They did not mention that this morning, an FPN would be far more effective than a free course.

Just read that they offered people not wearing a seat belt a "seat belt awareness" course or a £60 fine.
During one operation of 61 people caught only 38 choose the free course instead of the fine.
The awareness course could be miles away and will probably be on a week day. I'd prefer to take a £60 fine than have a day off work. Doubly so, since I'm self employed.

True, £60 seems cheap compared to a day of work.

One report sums up the mentality of some people:-
A pregnant woman's excuse for not wearing a seat belt was "she did not want to harm her unborn child", as she puffed away on a cigarette.

But isn't there the danger that points/fine will not work with a lot of drivers? They'll see it as part of the "war on the motorist" and get them writing letters of complaint to the Daily Mail.

Yet a well thought-out course might actually get through to them. You know the kind of thing - pictures of RTCs, stats etc.

My father-in-law was flashed by a speed camera and thought it most unfair, but the course he went on made hime stop and think.

thats it in a nutshell. for a lot of people punishing them won't change a thing. hence career criminal in and out of prison.

educate somebody and they may well change.

a bit like when an idiot road user causes a problem and you retort back "how would you fel if your child etc was being treated like you are treating me" .

I have to set people to work and therefore have to ensure they understand the consequences of not working safely. the threats of removal from site didn't work in the pre start breifings, so many years ago i found some gruesome pics of injuries caused by diferent tasks and used them as an example ofwhat could happen. safe working procedures were adhered to a lot more

Maybe so.

But perhaps the fine should be doubled if they get caught after having been on a course.

What's the point in the points system if it is so hard to accumulate 12 points? Fine them, ban them and make them use other modes of transport. They will soon learn how to behave on the roads.

The only reason we have this whole war on the motorists is because we have been far to soft on them for to many years, they think they own the road and their attitude is what puts us at risk.
