They are really handy, not sure about damaging the heads. I guess you could do that with normal ones if your cack handed!

I use the ball ends for accessing difficult to get bolts, use them to turn them until they start getting tight then shift to a conventional allen key to apply torque (and put up with the difficult access for these final turns). No real risk of ball ends damaging sockets if used in this way.
