Going to get the old mountain bike out the shed and give it the once over for the wet commutes rather than using the best bike.

So, im looking for some SPD pedals that I can use for the commute with my cycling shoes but also pedals that will be ok for normal shoes when im just out on it taking the kids around etc..

Any suggestions?

Shimano T780
Built in reflectors so legal after dark, hang right so a kick forwards action engages the SPD side and and a drag back action gets the flat side

I've always raved about the A530 but they are more an occasional platform for popping to the shops (or as a confidence building starter into SPDs).
Have the T780 on the hardtail-do-everything-else bike so +1 to comments by @andrew_s above

My Shimano SPD's have a removable black plastic side

I'm sure it's these

A dedicated flat/clip pedal is better.

Whilst you can use normal shoes with the M424 (or similar), it's not very comfortable as there's no cleat recess in the sole for the lump the clip makes to sit in.

The clip in reflector/platform is also less good than a dedicated flat/clip pedal as it hangs clip upwards and you've got to turn it over every time to get the flat side. Also, the plastic "cleat" bit isn't as strong as a metal cleat, and after a bit you'll find you need to lever open the clip with a screwdriver to remove it.

M424 for me, on both bikes. Quite happy as they are very versatile. In my experience a reasonably thick sole (think decent trainers) will allow you to do short distances on the m424 fine. If you're just pootling about with the kids should be no problem.

M647 for me. SPD on both sides but the platform is easily big enough to ride unclipped or in trainers. Bombproof build quality too
