Right my personal furthest is 26 miles (1400feet climbing) and I was ok after, I'm going out tomorrow to do either 38 or 53 miles (2500 or 3500 feet climbing) I know the sensible thing to do is the 38 then the 53 next time, but I'm really tempted to go for the longer one as its a loop that has a further town in it and it'd feel fairly milestone'y.

This is all following the nice blue signs so I can't get lost on an mtb.

Thoughts from real riders?

Go for it. But take your time - don't push your pace at the beginning.
Plenty of food and hydration.
Be prepared for a sore bum by the end, and probably sore legs as well!
Good luck!

+1 if you mentally feel right that's more than half the battle. Take it steady you should be fine!

Do the 53. My progression a couple of years ago was something like a couple of 10 m ilers a 20 a 55 then a 100 miler all within about 3 months.

I was seriously unfit and 4 stone overweight at the time.Make yourself do the first half of the ride slower than you think you need to then you will do it easilly.Set off even slightly too quick and you will suffer badly towards the end.

Eat , drink and stop for a rest now and then .

awesome, I love you guys, I have bail points to turn it into a nice 25 mile, then 38 mile route before I go all the way and it all comes under the 'my sister drives an espace and will rescue me for wine' range

I really want to have a crack at the exmouth exodus so if I can ride 50 miles without dying now then 100 by august on a proper bike will be a piece of

Why go out and do something you know you probably can do, go out and do something harder, the sence of achievement is far greater

Well if you've got that kind of back-up - no question, you've got to go for it! Let us know how you get on!

Yes - go for it. I'm currently upping my mileage significantly week on week in the run up to a 93 mile sportive.

Furthest i'd ever done before was 50 miles at the end of last summer, but last weekend I did a 60 miler on my old hybrid (while the road bike was in bits in the garage) after just doing a couple of 30 mile rides this year to date.

Take it easy to start with, warm up well, take some flapjacks or energy drink as well as plenty of water... and stop for lunch if you need! I stopped at a nice café half way through my 60 miler for a big fat tuna sandwich. It was just the ticket.

Tell you what - despite all your problems it beats being at "ahem" work, like I am at the moment.

Yeah go for it.

I have been off on long distances now that the freeze is over, I went straight into 20 miles, then into 40 miles, and will do 40 or 50 this Saturday, building up to about 110 miles.

Just go off and see how you go, if you don't feel you'll manage then just cut it short, but try and extend on your last ride.
Just make sure you have enough fuel on board, or if you plan to stop, which I rarely do, then take some cash and top up the drink.

But most of all, have a damned good ride and enjoy!

I'm at work tomorrow Oli so it all balances out

I had to cut it short in the end, I was going too slowly and time was getting on (I thought people were waiting for me for lunch at the time)

worked out at 42 miles with 2700 feet of climbing I got lost and had a good 15-20 miles to do if I wanted to do the long route + I was speaking to my friend who used to deliver for the brewery and one of the roads I need to take is a bloody fast one with many lorries and I just don't feel comfortable in that kind of traffic yet (sorry not a city rider) did it in 4 and a half hours and I was bloody tired on the way back around and had to walk up a few hills (shaaaammmmeeeee) but I hope next week to try it again and turn to finish the 38 mile loop properly without getting lost with some more speed
